It was suggested to me this morning by a friend in the business that the Senators and Sharks might want to consider a 1-for-1, high-profile trade that would give each team a significant shake on the heels of a disappointing season:
Jason Spezza for Joe Thornton. Now, some people will say that's like swapping apples for apples, but that's not exactly the case, and even if it was, so what? It'd still be trading a Granny Smiths for a MacIntosh. They may be similar, but they are not exactly the same. For your comparison purposes: Spezza, who is 25, is listed as 6-foot-2, 206 pounds. He has 418 points in 404 regular season games. He has 39 points in 40 playoff games. He'll make $8 million for each of the next four years. Thornton, who is 29, is listed as 6-foot-4, 235 pounds. He has scored 842 points in 836 regular season games. He has 53 points (and just 12 goals) in 76 playoff games. He'll make $7.2 million for each of the next two seasons. My opinion: The younger Spezza has more upside. But if the cap goes down, as expected, that salary could be a real handicap. Thornton's size is a plus, even if he doesn't always play that big, and he really does need to improve his playoff numbers. But then, he hasn't had the benefit of playing on a line with Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, either. Based primarily on contract considerations and because I already have Heatley, Alfredsson and Mike Fisher extended until the end of the 2012-2013 season, I think I'd make that deal if I'm the Senators. If I'm the Sharks, who need some hope that things will get better to sell their fans over the summer, I'd certainly do it. Comments:

I think the Sens would be getting the short end of that deal.
Thornton is 4 years older and 2 years away from free agency. If the Sens honestly think Joe would agree to a contract extension with Ottawa, and the Sharks throw in a good prospect or a high draft pick (say, a second rounder), then I could see it happening.

I'd do it. Thornton's post-season numbers are mostly against the West; what's Spezza's PPG average in the 5 against Anaheim?
However, what was your point regarding the cap? Spezza' cap *hit* is $200K *less* than that of Jumbo-Joe. Granted, it's for 2 years longer, but it's certainly not higher. Salary matter only to the owner, not the cap.

Sorry, yeah I should have mentioned the hit number. But my point was that I'd rather be stuck with a big contract for two years, instead of four. Especially if I'm the Senators and have three other long term deals, and especially if the cap is going down.

Yes, the cap hit (especially long term), is a concern. But what happens when the contract is over? We might turn into the next Buffalo Sabres, where all our good skill guys disappear (via free agency).
Either way, we're in a downhill slide.

Yeah. no. Spezza is younger and he will hopefully turn in to something more than just a playmaker. I say stick with Spez.

We just wrote an entry over at www.stayclassy.net last week about this very topic. With Spezza's playoff numbers and age, you have to go with Spezz.

This talk is hogwash and blog fodder only. It has as much merit as Ignatief's love/allegience for this country (now that the crown is up for grabs). Who has great numbers against Anaheim...I watched a team from Detroit lose to the Ducks and that team did not resemble the Red Wings. Yes they got 59 shots but they were from the perimeter...Zetterberg was non existent as were many....Datsuyk showed some cajones...love the guy and a couple of defencemen. Is Hossa playing...if so he doesn't carry the puck anymore. I cannot believe how much room Anaheim gets...Pronger comes out of his own end, going 1/2 mile an hour and no pressure!!!!! Anaheim get away with murder; it is not enough that Brown isn't suspended (his late hit was far worse than Brashear's) but the elbows, stick infractions and pushes/shoves/face washes after every whistle! This team could and should be penalized on every shift! Detroit needs to bring Joey Kocur back to give them some Wings (aka: stones)!

Anaheim's owners have a very strong voice in the owners' stable, and Bettman's ear. They have a lot of dirty (not tough, but dirty) players. Detroit is starting to look old. They need to infuse a little more young blood onto thier team int eh next season.
But, you know how it is. Everyone in the hockey world is lauding the Red Wings and how wonderful their organization is, so is just a little too easy for them to stand pat.

Absolutely....and the American dominated theme for the NHL MUST have a southern California presence...I would love to see someone openly challenge Pronger. Watching Cheechoo run at him made my heart soar...he could play on my team any day! The thing I don't understand is why the fear factor? There is Pronger who plays like he was in the old Senior A hockey league wielding his stick about with no regard and then there is Porous...after that what is there to be afraid of....there are Getzlaf and Perry who you have to shame into dropping the gloves...they have learned a lot from Pronger!
