Startin' Martin .... say it ain't so!

The most obvious problem with the Senators is their lack of offence, as their league-low 80 goals (2.35 per game) would indicate.
But when your confidence is shot and you're not scoring, you especially can't afford to give up the deflating, easy goals against.
And for that, if no other reason, Martin Gerber should not be permitted back in their net.
Gerber is supposed to start in Edmonton tonight, and when I heard that I lost any sense that the Senators might snap out of their 12-game road losing streak. The other players will all defend their friend and teammate, but they see Gerber giving up the softies too. They will point to the number of good saves he made against Vancouver, and he did. But how many goals that should have been stopped - like Alexander Edler's blue line shot that gave the Canucks a comfortable 3-0 lead - does Craig Hartsburg have to see before he staples Gerber's butt to the bench for good?
If I was trying to save my job and turn this team around, I wouldn't be able to put Gerber back in goal. Ever.
Now, you say Alex Auld is struggling too? Fine, then it's time to recall Brian Elliott.
Ready or not, here he should come.
The 23-year-old's stats suggest he's worthy of promotion. In a league high 27 appearances with the Binghamton Senators, Elliott is 16-7-1. He has a decent goals against average of 2.42 and a good save percentage of .924.
They have to try something. Maybe the players will rally around the kid. Maybe he'll make saves Gerber or Auld wouldn't. Maybe he'll stop all the easy shots.
They have to try something.
They should try Elliott.

The problem with bringing up Elliott is that this team is so lousy that the poor guy will be shell shocked and probably ruined for the future when they will really need him. The best plan now is to play for a high draft choice and let some of the expensive drifters on the team go at the end of this season.

well guys i left a few messages on facebook now ill give them on here maby murray or melnyk will read it..fire hartsburg and hire me for half the price.to start things off i will put up a board with 2 sides on 1 side will be for the players that want to play the other for the saps that just want their $$$.i will give them 2 games to show me they are here to play hockey not play around 4 the $$$.after 2 games the ones that are not playing will go to the minors and i will bring up players that want to play.this includes the goaltenders...i live in kelowna b.c.born and raised in ottawa.later lived in shawville just like murray.now you players that make millions for what you are doing should tell your lousy coach that you need time in the minors so you can get your game back. we as fans would like to have a team that is in it to win not a bunch of over paid wannabies so get your act together and show your fans that your worth your pay..p.s. murray take these saps and put them to work on the farms out their at least they will earn some of their pay.have a good 1

Gerber, Auld, Elliot, what's the difference who's in goal? This is a bad team going nowhere.

Don't subject the kid to needless embarassment.

They paid Gerber 3-plus million, let them get their money's worth by playing him.

This is INSANE!!!

Gerber, again? Did Hartsburg miss goal #3 the other night?

Why does he hate Auld?

While Auld has been struggling of late - this may be because Hartsburg has been chipping away at his confidence ever since he actually let Gebrer engage in this goaltending "battle."

Since Gerber started those back to back games, the first of which he recorded a shutout, it's been all downhill for the Sens.

Someone smack Harts upside the head until he puts Auld in consistently.

Don't mind the Elliott idea either...he's earned it and if you don't trust Auld then he should be the guy you turn to and NOT Gerber.

Bah. Play a pilon. It won't matter. The team isn't playing as a team. Where is Fish? Where is Spezza? Where is Heater.. and I hate to say it.. but where the heck is Alfie?

I am not off the band wagon. I am still wearing my Alfie jersey with pride.

Here is hoping for a win tonight..

GO SENS GO

Gerber doesn't matter Don.

Put Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, Jacques Plante, Mike Palmateer, Georges Hainsworth...

Senators have no testicles and they think they can walk into a rink and win on rep alone.

They'll win tonight because the boogeyman said there would be changes...then they will lose to the Leafs, Thrashers and Islanders because no changes were threatened.

Gutless pukes.

John is right - don't ruin our only hope for the future by bringing up the kid to this mess.

Pavan, I hear ya. We might look like a decent team on paper but they play like a bunch of cats out there (as in, everyone's doing their own thing). There's no coaching, no system in place, the assistant coaches are useless, and the team leadership is out the window.

Look what happened last night...although they payed a crappy team they won. Hartsburg put Kelly and Vermy toghether...Fisher and Neil together and re-united Alfie, Spez and heater...what a shock! This is what I have been saying for months now! Ruutu is an embarassment...but aside from that the team looked pretty good. Vermy should have gotten a star. Spezza did what he does...again...carried the puck up the ice, set people up and scored yet again and the two goals Edmonton got were BS (Alfie give a way and shot behind the net that goober lost). Philips played his best game of the year last night! Bell is a minor leaguer and afraid, McAmmond and Donovan skate fast...I can't wait to see what the Mimes will do next from behind the bench!
