BlogsMay 11, 2008Savard to Florida?
The talk is Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin is going to turn to an old friend for the coaching post in the Sunshine State.
Sources told me today that Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Andre Savard has emerged as one of the top candidates for the vacant coaching post with the Panthers. Savard and Martin have a long history together. They were on Pierre Page's staff in Quebec City and worked together with the Senators. Savard is a former GM of the Montreal Canadiens. He's had strong success working with Penguins coach Michel Therrien. Comments:

Does it appear to anybody else that a disapportionate number of NHL coaches are french? And being on Page's staff is far from a good point on your resume! That staff took an up & coming young team & through gross incompetence had a disasterous season. This same group of players would shortly win the cup with another french dud Bob Hartley coaching. It shows how bad Page actually was when the team that quit on him worked hard for Hartley, then gave up on him too. And how did Gainey & Carbonneau get such a free pass after making some very questionable moves?
