Coco & Dugas - November 8, 2009

Simon Whitfield & Catriona Le May Doan

Welcome to another edition of the two sexiest sports bloggers you'll ever read or have the privilege of meeting Coco & Dugas. Personality counts right? In this week's blog we talk about the unfortunately famous junior hockey hit involving Michael Liambas and Ben Fanelli, the surprising Avalanche, Favre's return to Green Bay, Cito back for at least one more year and the joke show that is CTV personalities running with the Olympic torch.

If there's a topic that we missed that you yourself wish to rant about feel free to do so. You're also welcome to tell us how wrong or right we are on our thoughts and opinions.

1) What's your opinion on Michael Liambas' hit on Ben Fanelli and the full year suspension he got for it?
Dugas: Absolutely I do. I respect Liambas' role on the team and what he was trying to do, but you just have to know better. The hits get worse and worse every year, they really need to come up with the "solution" for it fast.
Coco: My only beef with the hit was that he raised his arms which caused Fanelli's head to crash into the glass as hard as it did. As for the suspension I think it's way too harsh. I get Branch is trying to set a tone but Liambas is an overager so this suspension ended his junior career, one in which he was be trying to catch the attention of pro scouts and earn at least a tryout for camps next year.

2) Do you think the Colorado Avalanche are for real and will be able to make the playoffs as true contenders and make some noise?
Dugas: I like the Avs, they're a young and exciting team to watch, but no I don't see this lasting all year. Depending on how some other teams pan out it's possible they sneak into the playoffs, but contenders is a bit of a stretch for now.
Coco: No I don't. I'm always a fan of young exciting teams, but looking at their forward and defensive depth this just reeks of a flash-in-the-pan type scenario. Craig Anderson is a solid tender, showed it in Florida last year, but right now he's playing over his head like the rest of the team and I'll be surprised if they end up making the playoffs.

3) Do you agree with the Green Bay Packers fans booing Brett Favre in his return last week?
Dugas: Not at all. Favre was Green Bay for years and I think that he would still bleed green if he was cut. I find it very disrespectful. See Toronto's reaction to Sundin returning with Vancouver as the right way to do it.
Coco: I don't agree with it either. What Leaf fans did with Sundin is a perfect example of how you should treat such a situation. You cheer and give him respect before and at the start of the game, but during the game is when you boo and let him know that he's playing for the opposition.

4) Looks like Cito Gaston will be back as the Jays manager for one more year, good or bad move?
Dugas: Bad move, I only know so much not being in the clubhouse everyday, but it really seems he is losing the players. Also a lot of questionable decisions from on the field to his late season comments about Barajas as well as the reports of how negative he is to be around. The Jays wont contend they need to stay positive and grow.
Coco: I think it's a bad move as well. Gaston is the type of manager you want running your team when you're contending and have players that can run the locker room by themselves pretty much, not a team that's trying to grow around a young core of players.

5) How big of a joke is it that 27 CTV personalities are carrying the Olympic torch through various parts of the country for the 2010 Olympics?
Dugas: It's a pretty big joke absolutely. My honest opinion likely is not allowed to be posted here so I'll leave it short and simple: horse manure.
Coco: It's a complete joke. Now, I don't hate on the people who said yes, cause I know I would if I was ever asked, it's the company CTV that I blame for letting this happen. The Olympics are supposed to be about celebrating sport, have coaches, amateur athletes and people who are important to their communities run with the torch, not people who talk gossip, host reality shows and sit behind a desk.

Take off,
Coco
