Turco's time to shine
Put the statistics away, at least until Game 7, if there is one.
Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco put all the questions to rest about whether he can win at Joe Louis Arena and as a result, his team will live to play another day.
Turco, who starred for the Michigan Wolverines and posted a record of 18-5 wearing the Maize and Blue at JLA during his college career, posted his first professional victory at The Joe today and he did so in dramatic fashion, making 38 saves to lead the Stars to a 2-1 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings.
Prior to today, Turco was 0-9-2 at JLA and there weren't many reporters who hadn't asked him about his struggles there.
Consider this a "thanks for asking" from Turco. And don't bother asking him about it again.
Just like that, the 3-0 stranglehold the Red Wings had at one point is down to a 3-2 lead as the series shifts back to Texas for Game 6.
If Turco and company can win for a second time on home ice, the heat will be on as the Red Wings attempt to avoid being the third team in NHL history to blow a 3-0 series advantage.
The climb remains uphill, but the Stars have come to life and look rejuvenated after a sluggish start.
One of the big reasons for the turnaround is the determined play of forward Toby Petersen.
After spending much of the campaign toiling for the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League because the parent club was afraid of losing him on waivers, Petersen has been asked to help shutdown the Wings' dynamic duo of Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk and so far, he's been up for the challenge.
And what more can you say about the gritty effort of Stars captain Brenden Morrow. He left the ice in Game 3 with what looked like a serious wrist or shoulder injury and barely missed a shift.
Morrow's mere presence is one of the reasons the Stars cling to hope they can still overcome long odds and advance to the Stanley Cup final.
