Wings not going anywhere

Sick of the Detroit Red Wings dominating the regular season standings?

Tired of their playoff flame-outs?

Get used to it. It's going to be a long time before the Wings fail to crack the top eight in the Western Conference or even fall to the point where they don't own home-ice advantage in the first round.

The team simply mines too many golden nuggets from the latter part of the draft, which is usually barren ground for other clubs (for some teams, anything beyond the first round is a total crap shoot).

But consider these hot Wings.

Tomas Holmstrom -- 257th overall in the 1994 draft.

Henrik Zetterberg -- 210th overall in 1999.

Even Nicklas Lidstrom, the most sturdy defenceman in hockey, went with the 53rd pick in 1989 -- 21 picks ahead of a guy named Sergei Fedorov. now with Washington.

This trend doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon and it's not relegated to simply European players.

The Wings selected Regina Pats defenceman Logan Pyett 212th overall (the second-last pick in the draft) in 2006. He was good enough to play for the Canadian team that won the gold medal at the world junior hockey tournament this year.
