BlogsMay 20, 2008Nets-Raptors rumours making the rounds
Dave D'Allesandro of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that league executives have told him that the Nets and Raptors have had talks regarding Andrea Bargnani.
Logic tells us Richard Jefferson would be the guy coming back in such a move. There's a 2% chance this move happens, but lets discuss anyways. Would you move Bargnani knowing that there's a chance the light comes on and he becomes a better Memo Okur? I'd probably do it because I have concerns about his motor and if he'll ever have the will to assert himself on either the boards or defence, but it could certainly come back to bite you, especially since New Jersey is a division rival. This isn't a new idea from D'Allesandro, by the way. Here's what he wrote earlier this month: "The Raptors are frustrated and out of answers with regard to ANDREA BARGNANI, who was a no-show (6.4 ppg, 1.4 rpg) in the first-round loss to Orlando. Truth is, there wasn't a time this year when the kid didn't look physically and mentally exhausted. Still, the potential is tantalizing if he has the right mentor (such as, say, the Nets' KIKI VANDEWEGHE). So let's throw this out there: Bargnani and expiring contracts (JOEY GRAHAM, JORGE GARBAJOSA) for RICHARD JEFFERSON, who would be the perfect wing-walker for the point guard tandem in Toronto and an ideal No. 2 option playing off CHRIS BOSH. Just one snag: "If they traded me within the division, I'd kill them four times a year," RJ says. "But yeah, (Raptors GM BRYAN) COLANGELO has watched me since high school." RJ would be super nice, but giving up Bargs is a bad idea.

I'd love to see the raptors get a player like RJ, but if you are somehow able to get him in a deal now, you might as well wait till the middle of next season to see how bargnani performs. He won't perform worse than he did this year, so he'll be better to the point where you would want to keep him or get you more in a trade. Plus the raptors would make the playoffs anyways w/ or w/o RJ, so getting someone like him in the middle of the season would just be a huge bonus for the playoffs. Overall....there's no rush to deal Andrea.
