Goodbye, Leafs?

Hamilton's Alena Sharp, Canada's top player on the LPGA Tour this year, has a Toronto Maple Leafs head cover on her driver, but she said today she's willing to chuck it for this week.
“I was waiting for that one to come up. Last year in Edmonton, I got flack about it...so if someone is willing to bring an Ottawa Senators head cover, I'll put it on my bag for the week. I guess you can put that out in the media.”
Sharp will have an interesting day tomorrow. She's going to play with Michelle Wie and Canadian amateur star Maude-Aimee Leblanc.
“I think she's a great kid,” said Sharp of Wie, who is always shadowed closely by her parents. “People don't realize that it's hard when you're parents are with you all the time. She's going to be...she's already a great player. She's going to be a really good player once she figures out what she needs to do for herself.”

Hooray for Alena for celebrating Michelle Wie. All too often she is the target of mob hatred and I don;t know why. She, by far, is the most fun to watch on the LPGA for her sheer raw potential; there are no hybrids in her bag and she knocks it a mile. People forget that 2 years ago she was ranked number 2 in the world! I don't like the way she is managed but she is one fo the top income earners on the LPGA! As such she has obligations to get visibility. Recently on the mens tour, she missed the cut but beat many of the men! She is only 18 and people should cut her some slack. Congratulations to Alena for celebrating this wonderful kid who will be the best female golfer on the planet or at the very least number 2.

Bobby, there's no questioning Wie's talent. She was hurt much of the last year, but looks like she's getting her form back. I agree with Sharp and other players. The LPGA needs her.

No guff Chris...Is it just me Chris or do you share the notion that the new Commish for the LPGA is not doing a stellar job? Under Votaw they were getting much more vsibility, more coverage, better press. There is no need to slam anyone in Golf (maybe Daly, but do it privately) particularly someone who will be on your tour, who is extremely popular and could help garner TV coverage!!! I am very disapointed in Sorenstam for her public comments about Wie...it serves no purpose. The sadest part of the Wie saga is the fact that: a)the LPGA had the lattitude to over rule her disqualification in a tournament she shared the lead after the 3rd round, in a few weeks back (signing a score card 30 feet from the scorers tent...give me a break) and b) Wie could have gotten an invitation to the ladies British Open but did not. Carolyn Vesper Bivens needs to recognize what sells this tour: pretty girls who are easy on the eyes, who are very good at their craft (most golfers male or female can identify with their games) and young emerging super stars like Wie.
