Worthington on Conservatism

What's a conservative?

The venerable Peter Worthington, founding editor of the Toronto Sun, ought to know.

No one would ever suspect him of being a knee-jerk liberal.

But this self-described conservative defines his views in terms that may surprise you.

Did you know, for example, that Worthington is basically pro-choice? Or that he's for gay rights? Did you know that he's a fan of Michael Ignatieff - the leader of the Liberal party of Canada?

I sure didn't - despite reading Peter Worthington's columns regularly - until I had the chance to speak to Mr. Worthington in person about his views.

What follows is a frank and eye-opening take on what it means to be a conservative in Canada today, from a fiery journalist who's never hesitated to speak his mind.

He seems fairly smart, and I like some of what he has to say, but I think he's maybe sort-of typical of the conservatives of his generation, not the current politicians.

I'm fairly lefty, but I can understand and get behind some fiscal conservatism; I don't really get the whole defense and security thing - seems xenophobic and protectionist in a way that's no longer actually relevant, though it carries a lot of weight politically

I also like Ignatief for the reasons Worthington says; he knows that world, and he knows Canada, and I don't think he'd look like such a lump on the world stage as Harper does.

The defense and security thing isn't necessarily xenophobic: whether we like it or not, we actually have enemies in the world.

Sitting on a disproportionate share of the world's resources also makes Canada a target, again, whether we like it or not...

Sure sure sure, but it seems the Conservative stance is really hardline and too focused. I don't mind security as a part of the national plan, but to focus on it excludes a lot of other important stuff.
